Storage FAQs

How do I select the proper storage space to fit my needs?
Storage space rentals are determined by the total size of the items being stored. In general, an efficiently packed, smaller space will cost less than a larger space. For additional information regarding which storage unit size may suit your individual needs, please review our unit size guide or contact us directly to speak with one of our professionals.
Is there anything I should do to prepare my unit before move-in?
All American Mini Storage units are thoroughly cleaned prior to being occupied. Customers are welcome to prepare their unit further by placing plastic or pallets on the floor under their belongings. American Mini Storage professionals are happy to answer any additional questions regarding move-in preparation.
How should I organize my storage space for easiest access to all my items?
Place frequently used items near the door. Leave a walkway to the rear of the unit as well as a center aisle for easier access to all items. Leave air space around the perimeter to aid with ventilation. Make use of all available space, including height. Do not lean items against the walls or door.
Are my belongings placed in storage insured?
Tenants are responsible for insuring belongings that are placed in storage. Items stored in storage units may or may not be covered under an individual’s homeowner or renters policy.  American Mini Storage suggests you contact your insurance provider to review your homeowners or renters policy to determine if items will be covered while in storage.
How should I prepare furniture for storage?
All Furniture: Wax wood furniture before storing. Use sheets or cotton cloth to cover furniture, and furniture covers or pads to prevent scratching.
Sofas, Mattresses and Beds: Place a pallet, corrugated cardboard mat or plastic sheet on the floor and stand sofas and mattresses on end (sofas or pullout beds should not be stored on their sides). Disassemble bed frames and mark all pieces for easier reassembly. Protect mattresses with covers or plastic bags.
Tables: Disassemble tables and wrap legs with protective bubble wrap or paper, marking all pieces for easier reassembly. If a table will not disassemble, place padding on the floor and place the table on its top with the legs pointing upward.
Chairs: Leave slipcovers on upholstered chairs and cover with plastic chair covers. Most lightweight chairs can be stacked "seat to seat" or placed upside down on tables that cannot be disassembled.
Dressers: Use dresser tops for stacking cartons. Maximize space by storing linens, collectibles, miscellaneous or smaller, fragile items in dresser drawers. Use blankets, sweaters or towels for padding and protection.
Shelves: Disassemble shelves. Wrap and mark all pieces for easier reassembly.
How should I prepare appliances for storage?
To save space, fill the interiors of appliances with linens, clothes or stuffed toys.

Refrigerator: A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly dried and stored with its door left slightly ajar to prevent mold growth. Some goods may be stored inside large appliances. Boxes may be stacked on top of stoves, refrigerators and freezers.
Stove: Ensure stoves and cooking equipment are cleaned before being stored.
Washing Machine: Stuff towels between the washing machine and the inner tube of the machine to prevent the tube from rotating.
Vacuums: Remove and discard vacuum cleaner bags before storing.
Should I pack belongings in plastic bags?
Humidity can gather in plastic bags and potentially cause damage to belongings. American Mini Storage recommends customers avoid storing belongings in plastic bags, especially in storage units that are not air-conditioned.
Are there items I am not able to store in a storage unit?
State laws determine which items are permitted to be stored in a storage unit. Items that should not be stored in a storage facility include but are not limited to:
·         Live animals
·         Liquids
·         Explosives
·         Flammable liquids and fuels
·         Toxic materials
·         Perishables
·         Illegal drugs
·         Food items
·         Other items that require a controlled environment

For any questions regarding storing a specific item, please contact American Mini Storage professionals.
Am I able to store gasoline powered tools and vehicles?
Gasoline powered tools and vehicles such as lawn mowers, power tools, boats, snowmobiles and cars can be stored. However, as it is illegal to store gasoline, all gasoline must be drained from tools and vehicles prior to storing.
